Chapter Five

AS JAY closed the door behind Levi Smith, his heart sank. He’d been expecting to see Cameron here today, not his assistant. Well, Jericho Brown wouldn’t sit around waiting for the phone to ring. It would be great if he did enjoy the ice cream, but Jay could get ahead without the help of the almighty Cameron Clay. In fact, he decided he didn’t want Cameron’s help even if Cameron called him up as soon as Levi got back to the office with the special ice cream.

He had done just fine so far on his own. Without even trying he’d been building his business. All his clients were asking for larger orders, and soon he’d need to hire additional staff. Once he started up a website and did some active promo, business would really take off—with or without Cameron Clay. At the moment he had too much to do to let thoughts of Cameron consume any more of his time. He felt guilty that he’d left most of the work for Maya and Kimmy while he’d played around with flavor combinations all week, and that had to stop.

“So tell us all about the interview!” Maya asked as Jay walked back into the kitchen. All the machines were running while she and Kimmy prepped nuts and chocolate for the next batches.

“Cameron didn’t show up.” Jay shrugged, trying to pretend he didn’t care. He didn’t bother to change back into jeans and a T-shirt, just draped an apron over his clothing and ran the ties around his back, before tying them in the front.

“What?” Kimmy looked as shocked and disappointed as Jay felt.

“His assistant, the one who set up the appointment, well

he came by to do the interview, too.” He sighed and half sat

on the edge of the counter while Kimmy and Maya shelled

Brazil nuts. He grabbed a handful of nutmeats from a bowl

and absently tossed them into his mouth.

“Stop that!” Kimmy treated him to a slap on the wrist.

“The way youeat it’ll take us half an hour to make up for

your little snack. Go eat something like a banana that

doesn’t take so much effort!”

“Sorry.” Jay meant it. He had a terrible habit of

unconscious nibbling, especially when he was upset or

depressed. He remembered the tub of ice cream he’d eaten

the other night, stressing out because Cameron hadn’t

called. Today he was so miserable he could probably eat a

gallon or so, and made a mental note not to go anywhere

near the finished product while he was in this rotten mood.

BY EARLY Wednesday afternoon, Cameron had been to a dozen ice cream places in San Francisco and another four in Oakland. He hadn’t come even close to finding Jay, and he knew it would take forever if he kept up like this. Elaine had told him the hunt was over unless he wrote a column on it, but he refused to write about anyone else’s ice cream. He couldn’t have Jay thinking he stood him up and plugged some competitor’s product in a nationally syndicated column.
